Indeed the trading system is very broken. This morning I sold a superior healing rune for only 25k to trader, but it costs 60k+ to buy it from him. That is like a 60% difference. I thought traders were suppose to sell items at 120% value and buy items at 80%, guess I was wrong. However, a few minutes after that, I sold a superior energy storage for 16k and it costs 18k to buy from trader. Hmmm

The trading system is really weird

The whole GW economy seems to be a little whacky. I have only recently started to find some dye not available at the trader. This in itself does reflect a real economy, in that vendors do run out of stock. But how then can a trader - and yes, I'm aware that they're not real - justify offering 74g for silver dye, when obviously it's so in demand. As sure as eggs is eggs, as soon as they do get some stock they'll be selling it for a silly price.

Of course the reason there is no stock, is that everone - including myself - is holding on to their supplies of dye, in the hope that they get a better deal.

If you thought dyes were bad, check out the rune trader:

I think I'll pass on that offer.

LOL!

Sorry about quoting the entire screenshot, but I thought it deserved a little more face time. That is just plain rediculous, along with insulting, and a boat load of other adjectives that my vocabulary doesn't possess. Wait, I forgot, there's "nothing wrong" with the traders. (that was a not-so-subtle shot at those that believe everything is peachy where traders are concerned)

I don't know if it's a regional issue, or just how the darned traders are functioning in general right now. Here's a quick example. (us servers)

The other morning at the normal material trader...
Selling 10 Fur for 18k, Buying 10 Fur for 12k

Last night...
Selling 10 Fur for 17k, Buying 10 Fur for 100g

I'm on the EU servers and we get diddly squat for most items nowadays. Black dye and runes of vigor seem to be the only money-spinners at the mo.

Up until a few days ago I felt the dye trader worked quite well, but now it's pretty obvious the dye trader pricing algorithm is buggy. He's completely out of silver and purple, buying price is something like 8K for silver, but when I tried to sell silver (I have over 20 silver) to him, he offered to buy for 101 gold.
This would be easy to fix by locking buying price at, say, 50% of selling price.

I'm also pretty certain now that someone's made a bot for speculating in dyes. It's not hard - continually ask for estimates, buy cheap, sell expensive - and a rapidly and wildly fluctuating market like the GW dye market is perfect for it. Possibly it's been around in the US for a while, but only started being used in the EU a few days ago.

Prices of gear have started skyrocketing in the EU now too. Perhaps the people screwing with the US market has branched out.

I don't doubt it one bit. I recall reading a few posts from a guy bragging about using a bot to monitor the rare material trader for ecto/shards (this was quite a few weeks ago now, can't remember where I read it either).

I was offered 25g for my minor vigor rune (selling at ~8k) and I was unable to get a quote for my superior vigor rune (selling at ~80k). The npc refused to buy it. Not sure if her stock was simply full or if it was because it is a prepatch rune (it has minor vigor artwork).

I couldn't believe the trader prices when I logged in on Monday. I had moved and was unable to play for a week... come back and find out the traders are on crack with their absurd prices. I checked the patch logs and there's most definately nothing there suggesting any change to the pricing.

P.S. Hey mods, don't you think it was a bit extreme to merge *all* of the dye trader threads? I mean, the starting post, being 4 months old, has nothing to do with the current broken traders.

If you don't buy the dyes, the prices will drop back into normal ranges when the market fills up with them again.

Think mon, think!

I still have to say that the best fix is to resupply the merchants twice a week (trade caravans), set a fixed buy/sell ratio, set fixed max/min prices and tie the current price to actual stock.

Simple in it's elegance, elegant in it's simplicity.

I still don't understand this: a few weeks ago when I was getting black dye for a new set of armor, the price was generally around 7-12k each. One night the trader was out of black -- the epitome of low supply, right? When she did get a black dye in, the price was around 4k. Needless to say I jumped on that (or tried to multiple times -- other people kept getting to it first). How does that work? I thought the idea was that as the supply goes down and hench demand goes up, that the price would go up too... not down.... isn't that backwards?
